Repair Exchange BKF file when Error “The fixed media is full” Come Across

Exchange Server developed by Microsoft is one of the powerful Mail server used by many organizations across the world. Every administrator of the Exchange Server knows the importance of data, that’s why it always creates a backup copy which can be used in recovery at the time of disaster.

If you don’t have backup of Exchange database, it is highly recommended to create a Backup Copy. You can use the NTBackup utility provided by Microsoft to create backup of Exchange Server.

But if you have formatted your hard drive in FAT file system, then you may face various issues in the Exchange BKF File. This happens because there is a limitation of the BKF size in the storage device formatted by FAT File System. In FAT based storage system you can only store a backup file of up to 4GB, if you have a backup file that contain data more than 4GB , you might receive errors while dealing with the Exchange Backup.

Let us understand the above error with one Example: Suppose you have a FAT file system partition & you store your Exchange Backup via NTBackup Tool in this partition. Also, you applied a daily or weekly auto backup schedule. As the size of the backup reach up to the 4GB, you might have received an error “The Fixed Media is Full” because there is a limitation in the FAT file system partitions that they cannot store Files that has contain data more than 4GB in it.

To avoid such types of Errors, it is highly recommended to format the Storage device using the NTFS file format. But in this situation you need to repair the corrupted Exchange BKF file. There is no manual solution to perform the recovery of BKF file, for that you need the help of third party utility.
