How to Recover Mailbox from RSG in Exchange 2007

Recovery Storage Group (RSG) is a feature that was first introduced in Exchange 2003 edition. Owing to its popularity and usage to recover mailbox databases, this feature was carried forward in Exchange 2007. In this blog, I am going to discuss various methods to recover and restore the Mailboxes from the Recovery Storage Group (RSG) Exchange 2007.

Methods to recover and restore the Mailboxes from RSG: –

1). Using the Exchange Management Shell to recover & Restore Mailbox from RSG: –

One can also use the Exchange Management Shell to manage Recovery Storage Group.

1). To perform the recovery operation first of all open your Exchange Management Shell

2). Now first of all create a recovery storage group by using the following commands

3). Now create a new recovery Database

new-mailboxdatabase -mailboxdatabasetorecover <Database_Name> -storagegroup <Server_Name>\<RSG_Name> -EDBFilePath <Database_Path>

5). In the Backup Exec create new restore job.

6). Now select the data that you want to restore

7). After that, open Microsoft Exchange Restore

8). After that, make a Check  on Redirect Exchange sets

9). Now Enter the name of the server.

10). After that click on the radio button of  Redirect using VSS snapshot provider

11). Now at last check Redirect to Recovery Storage Group (RSG)

12). After that click on the Run Now to proceed further

Steps to be performed to proceed further: –

To restore database from RSG, Restore-Mailbox cmdlet of PowerShell can be used. This cmdlet helps to copy mailbox database from RSG to any Exchange 2007 Server within an organization that has quality space and resource available to accommodate mailboxes. The standard cmdlet for restoring RSG is:

2). Restore the data from RSG using the NTBackup Utility: –

1). For that, first of all launch NTBack Utility. Select Restore Wizard

2). Click Next to proceed further

3). Now Select the RSG Backup that you wants to restore.

4). After that Click on Next, Next and then finish at the end you will see the location of the recovered data

3). Exmerge Utility to extract the mailboxes from the Recovery Storage Group.

For that first launch Exmerge utility on your computer.

1). Click on the Extract and Import option followed by Next.

2). Now Select Step 1: Extract data from an Exchange Server Mailbox followed by Next
3). Select Recovery Storage Group

4). Now select the Mailbox from where you want to extract the data.

5). After that select the location where you want to store the PST file.

6). After completion of the Task, click on Finish.

Limitations of Recovery Storage Group

  • RSG allows mounting and restoring the database of same Exchange version
  • RSG does not allow mounting or recovering public folders
  • At a time, only one RSG can be created and limited number of DBs can be recovered.

Solution to Overcome these limitations: –

To overcome these limitations, we have to take the help of third party tool. With the help of third party tool we can perform the entire recovery operation within a few numbers of clicks. The tools are easy to use and performs the operation in a Safe & Secure manner.

The tool allows recovery of mailboxes and public folders from Exchange EDB files to PST, MSG, EML file, and to another Exchange Server.
